Every child deserves to dream. The dream behind Morningstar began in 1996 when a group of concerned Baptists began talking about the need for specialized services to improve the lives of Georgia's most in-need children. Led by Morningstar's current CEO, Barry Kerr, the group was offered the property and facilities of the former Boy's Estate, a home and school for underprivileged boys located in north Glynn County. The group elected a board of directors and on September 13, 1996, Morningstar Baptist Treatment Services, Inc. assumed the leadership and responsibilities for the facility and program of the Boy's Estate campus. Later, in order to broaden their relationships, the organization changed its name to Morningstar Treatment Services and created a second supporting organization called the Morningstar Baptist Foundation, Inc. Both organizations are private, non-profit, and have staffs and supporters who are ecumenical in nature.
On the beautiful, 350 acre campus, bordering the Altamaha River, Morningstar established a caring home for children who need a place to go. Morningstar's Residential Treatment Center is a unique program for intellectually disabled and severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents. The campus provides on site special education services, various therapy options and individual treatment planning. The Morningstar staff quickly realized that, while every child deserves a place to belong, not all children need residential care. Many at-risk children live with loving families who simply need to acquire the skills necessary to deal with their child's particular struggles. In May of 1997, Morningstar added a network of Family Resource Centers across the state of Georgia. Through these centers, children and families throughout the state are served by the support of a competent team of local family care professionals. Since its beginning in 1996, Morningstar has continued to find new ways to strengthen children and families by providing the very best in treatment services. In addition to the Residential Treatment Center in Glynn County and the twelve Family Resource Centers throughout the state, Morningstar also offers a Therapeutic Foster Care Program to serve children who can benefit from community-based treatment, and the Treutlen House at New Ebenezer, a ministry for children and families dealing with personal crises. In addition to these in-state services, Morningstar has established several projects through Global Services which connect resources to children and families through orphanages, clinics and schools. With each of its services and in all of its locations, Morningstar Treatment Services is strengthening children and families and working to give every child what he or she deserves… a place to belong. |
